Last night I had the great pleasure of visiting with Christo and then hear him give a talk about his two current works in progress, Over the River, and The Mastaba: Project for the UAE. At 75 years young, Christo spoke with such energy and passion that the whole room was swept up in it. I can now understand how he and Jeanne Claude have been able to accomplish such monumental works! It was so interesting to hear the unique approach the couple has had for funding and carrying out their works. Christo and Jeanne Claude set up each project as a separate corporation, with its own staff, insurance and bank account. Whenever a project is up they literally “rent” the space and take full responsibilities and all rights for all aspects of the location. For example, when they produced The Gates, it snowed in NYC and the couple hired their own people to come into the park and shovel the sidewalks and streets…they rented the whole park for the durration of the project! Even more surprising, he raises all the funding for the projects by selling his own works (like the one below) and he said that he and Jeanne Claude are the largest collectors of their own works. They never work with galleries, they do all the selling themselves.  I look forward to following his current projects, and hope he is around to complete many more.
